The Mets have signed left hander Duane Below to a minor league contract without an invitation to spring training. He will instead head directly to Triple-A Las Vegas, and hope for a mid-season call-up.
The former Tigers prospect has been with Detroit and Miami throughout his brief MLB career. Last year, he re-upped with the Tigers, posting a 3.70 ERA in 22 games (21 starts) with 4.8 SO/9 and 3.2 BB/9 for their Triple-A affiliate.
While nothing to ride home about, Below will more than likely be given a strong chance to get called up if he has a strong few months in Las Vegas. The Mets have little left handed pitching depth, so it is expected that a few more of these signings will be on the way from now until Opening Day.
