Uh oh.
The Mets have announced that Josh Edgin has informed them of elbow discomfort in his left arm. The team also announced that he will undergo an MRI in the coming days to detect the source of the discomfort.
"It's elbow. It's everything. Arm. It's discomfort." Edgin said after yesterday's game. In that game, Josh reached 88 to 91 mph on his fastball, which normally sits at 93-94 mph. He also gave up back-to-back run scoring triples in his outing.
Dan Warthen told Adam Rubin of ESPN New York that this issue is different from last season's problem, which kept him sidelined for a big chunk of the year.
One concern is that the team does not have a viable safety net if Edgin were to miss a severe chunk of time. Scott Rice and Duane Below were the only two southpaw relievers brought in this winter, with the latter not even with the squad in Spring Training. It is evident, however, that Rule V pick Sean Gilmartin will, in fact, join the Opening Day squad if he even puts up a mediocre performance. Other options include, but are not limited to:
- Jack Leathersich
- Dario Alvarez
- Darin Gorski
I would have gladly welcomed Dana Eveland back, and would have considered deals with Joe Thatcher, Tony Sipp, Jake McGee, Antonio Bastardo, or Wesley Wright. Most of these players did not command anything more than a minor league deal with incentives, so it was a fair expectation.
Now we will have to wait and see what happens with Josh. Luckily we still have a few more weeks until Opening Day, leaving time for Alderson to get creative.
