Could Reynolds make the cut?

We are five games into Spring Training, and a few players have surprisingly come out of the gates on fire. One of those players is shortstop Matthew Reynolds, who I will be analyzing in today's article.

Reynolds, a former 2nd round pick from the University of Arkansas, grabbed the attention of the Mets front office in 2014 by hitting .343/.405/.454 in 126 games for Double-A and Triple-A. It marked a tremendous improvement from 2013, as he only hit .225/.300/.335 in 118 games for Single-A and Double-A. However, despite the breakout season, the Mets brass didn't seem too committed to him. Perhaps they wanted to see if he could repeat his stellar performance?

In any event, Reynolds came into spring with a chip on his shoulder, since Wilmer Flores was rumored to be the starting shortstop over the entire winter. Reynolds, who recently turned 24, appears to be ready, as he has hit .500 in the first 3 games of the Spring. Granted, it is an incredibly small sample size, but his walk-off home run from Friday afternoon's game, which I will link under here, was a monster shot that forced fans to know his name.

Reynolds figures to be in camp for the majority of March, barring an injury or a drought at the plate, and throughout that time he'll likely be given the chance to earn, at least, a backup infield job. We all know that Terry loves Ruben Tejada, and Sandy loves Wilmer Flores, so it may be a steep hill to climb, but no one should write off Matt just yet.

I'm going to predict that Flores starts the season with the squad, and Reynolds begins at Las Vegas. By mid-season, Matt will earn a call-up to either start or to be a backup, since I can't see Tejada being much better than Reynolds at this point.

In any case...

It's going to be a fun Spring.
